When the Missouri con vention meets, Missouri Democrats will indorse for president tUat.most emi nent Missouri Democrat, General Fran cis Marion Cockrell, who is how serv ing his thirtieth year in the senate of the United States; and by such action the Missouri "Democrats will do a rand, good thing. And no living man is more familiar with the entire - machinery of the federal government than is General Cockrell. I hail the action of the Tennessee Dena ocrats and what is certain to be the futtire action of the Missouri Demo crats as the beginaing of a new line of conduct which will restore the De mocracy to its old supremacy in the country. (Carmack is in every way worthy of tb? enthusiastic support of Tennesseeans, indeed of all Democrats His public career has been compare tively brief, but he has made his name known wherever the English tongue is spoken as an eloquent champion of hu man liberty. He is one. and a fore most one, in that coterie of spleirdid young Democrats who have recently gone to the senate andvho have ac complished so much to strengthen De mocracy in that body and to make of the Democratic minority a fighting force which the Republicans, notwith standing their great excess or num bers, fear to meet in open conflict Carmack would make a tiptop vice president, and in case of the death of the president would make a good presi dent Bailey In a bole. The situation warrants concern. It gives rise to questions involving the pow er of political organizations to control conventions, the right of minority and contesting delegates to organize rump conventions when they fail to secure proper consideration at the hands of the organization. The opposition in Wisconsin la headed by Robert Marion La Follette, governor of the state, who has been nominated by hia faction for a third term. He has had a picturesque career and for some years has been out of touch with the national leaders on almost every point Involved In the local factional fights. The "bolters," under the direction of Senators Spooner and Quarles. have named a complete state ticket, and the contest will be taken to the courts. Both factions have nam ad the same presiden tial electors, but even that action prom ises to be nullified, as La Foftette has demanded a share in the distribution of federal patronage- in his state under threat that he will put up new presiden tial electors and lose Wisconsin to" the Republican ticket if his wishes are not respected.
